Tom overseeing the farm field

Welcome to the Holtz Farms’ official blog, The Green and Gold Farmer!

We’re happy to have you join us on our journey in becoming better farmers. This blog will cover topics in sustainable agriculture and share news on how our South Central Wisconsin operation is going through the many seasons Midwest offers. We welcome all readers, from veteran farmers to new green thumbs to tune in.

To offer some background, Tom Holtz grew up on our family’s third-generation dairy farm tending to the cows and the crops at a very young age. When he was 18, his father gave him the option to either keep the dairy farm or sell the cows. My dad knew that he was no longer interested in milking but still enjoyed farming the land. Jumping to today’s operation, Holtz Farms now specializes in corn and soybeans with our main cover crops being winter wheat and rye.

In 1999, my mom, Jill, and my dad had me. They named me Aysha, and I did not come into this world alone. My twin, Tyson, was born 3 hours later while my older brother Ryan in the waiting room. Though my dad grew up in the thick of dairy farm operations, my brothers and I were born and raised in the city of Reedsburg. As a kid, I would occasionally jump in the cab and join my dad in farming. Just recently, I took interest in learning more about our farming practices after receiving a degree in Strategic Communications.

“So, why are you writing about a subject that you know little to nothing about?”

Well, for one, I find the connection farmers have with the land fascinating. The constant weather alerts that pop up on your phones, predicting whether it’s going to rain or shine outside, really grounds me in that we all need both to survive life. I also feel a strong urge to share Holtz Farms’ sustainable practices with the world around us. Which is why within this blog, you won’t be learning about topics I found on the internet. Rather, you will be indirectly reading to the information and the stories our farmers have learned throughout their many years of being stewards of the land.

Heads up, a wide range of farming-related topics are to be covered! Feel free to let us know what you want to learn more about by emailing us at: info@holtzfarmsllc.com. We’re all ears! The Green & Gold Farmer also invites your comments and well meaning feedback.

So, grab a hot cup of joe, or if you’re reading this at night, a cold Busch light, and enjoy reading our blog, The Green and Gold Farmer.
