Equipment Overhauls: Precision Mapping and Spring Preparations

March 4, 2024

New Diesel Fuel Tank

February has been relatively kind to us in terms of weather here on the farm — however this time of year is always saved for equipment overhauls, so, it doesn’t really matter what the temperature outside is like. As we move through the month, we’ve been focused on vital tasks to ensure machinery is in tip-top shape and our operations are primed for the upcoming spring planting season.

Equipment Upgrades and Repairs:

We’ve been hard at work replacing seed disc openers, seed firmers, and any other items that need upgrades. Our dump truck underwent an engine and transmission overhaul, ensuring it’s ready for the tasks ahead. Additionally, we’ve incorporated GPS satellite technology and JD monitors from 6000s to 7000-7500s on various vehicles like our Gator, enabling us to precisely map field boundaries for improved strip tilling operations. This will help us navigate machinery down to 120 ft of our headlands. Normally, without mapping our borders, we would do the headlands first, but this will allow us to plant our headlands last. Upgrades to our corn planter and tractors, including the installation of new JD receivers, further enhance our operational capabilities. Last but certainly not least on this equipment overhauls list is our new fuel 23,000 gallon diesel fuel tank.

Maintenance and Preparations:

Preventative maintenance remains a top priority for us, with ongoing work on equipment like our Hagie sprayer. We’ve also made strategic adjustments such as switching tires on our Hagie to optimize performance for our early spring operations. Our newly acquired semis underwent thorough inspections and necessary repairs to ensure compliance with DOT regulations.

Crop Handling and Storage:

Amidst equipment upgrades, we’re still focused on managing our current crop, particularly corn. Efforts are underway to empty our shivers dryer bin in preparation for its sale, as we transition to a new dryer system. Plans to replace it with a new bin for wet corn storage are in motion.

New Additions and Improvements:

Exciting developments include the arrival of our 20-inch bean planter at Hillsboro Equipment. Installation of aftermarket parts is underway to optimize its efficiency, reflecting our commitment to leveraging the latest technologies for improved productivity.

Continuous Learning and Preparation:

Our dedication to staying informed and prepared for the upcoming season remains unwavering. Tyler continues to attend crop insurance, seed/chemical/fertilizer informational meetings, ensuring we’re equipped with the knowledge and resources necessary for a successful year ahead. As February unfolds and March is afoot, we’re actively engaged in these tasks, laying the groundwork for a productive spring season on the farm. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our journey through the agricultural calendar. Oh — and make sure to check out January’s blog post to read more about our new year’s turnover.
